"PECS" Binders

PECS Binder Page 1

Page 1

PECS binders can be made using pictures (combinations of symbols and photographs) with words. Each word in a sentence would have a word associated with it and each word and picture can be laminated so that different combinations of words with pictures can be put together to create sentences.

The illustration shows a PECS binder. Each page in the binder includes an example of a sentence that can be made using the page. Some of the symbols used are from the Mayer-Johnson`s BOARDMAKER program (www.mayer-johnson.com). The original design and format of this particular PECS binder comes from Mr. Brandon Herscovitch of ABACS.LLC.

Along with the symbols, images you provide (preferably digital) can be added to personalize the learning materials. Suitable pictures can also be found using GOOGLE Image Search.

The exact words you want your son, daughter or student to learn can be used, with the words matched to appropriate symbols or pictures. To remove distraction, the backgrounds are usually removed from the pictures. This will allow your son, daughter or student to concentrate on the item pictured. The pictures with words are then printed, cut out and laminated to make laminated picture/word cards; then Velcro is attached. These are then used on a Velcro base with “sentence strips”. The Velcro base also has the same pictures/words in squares which helps to teach the child to “match” and “organize” the learning materials.

The illustrated “mini-PECS binder” was totally personalized to the child`s needs and he is using the binder to learn:

  • picture recognition
  • word recognition with pictures as visual cues
  • fine motor and hand-eye coordination
  • early sentence structure, and
  • categorization

We modify simple books by adding laminated picture cards instead of straight words or adding real pictures instead of cartoon pictures. Why? Because that is what your son, daughter or student would see in his or her environment.

The PECS Binder comes in two sizes:

  • regular or letter size - 10 ¼” (width) x 11 ¾ ” (height)
  • mini size - 7 ¼” (width) x 9 ¼” (height)

and includes:

Page 1

  • "I want” “TO” …
  • "Give me” “THE” …
  • “I” “feel” …

The “sentence strip” is attached with Velcro onto this page. The sentence strip is removable so that your son, daughter or student will begin the sentence with cards from one of the combinations above (on page 1); then he/she will flip to the appropriate word/picture card to finish the sentence.
